Representative Rodney Alexander
Independence Avenue and 1st Street SE
Washington D. C. 20515-1805
Dear Representative Alexander:
RE: DO MORE TO FIGHT DIABETES
I urge you
to increase research and prevention funding for diabetes at the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC).
Diabetes takes a
very personal toll on the lives of the almost 21 million Americans with
this disease and the nearly 225,000 people who die from its
complications. I have experienced this first hand as my grandmother
died from complications of diabetes at the age of seventy. I
participate in Louisiana’s Outstanding Teen Program and my platform is
“Preventing the Complications of Diabetes.” As part of my community
service I would like to encourage your support in the fight against
Diabetes.
In addition to the
human cost, this disease is a threat to our nation’s healthcare system
and economy. Last year alone, diabetes cost the U. S. $174 billion.
Education, programs and research can work toward curing, preventing, and
managing the disease, but not without your help. The key issue in the
state of Louisiana in the fight against diabetes is the lack of
funding. Louisiana only gets $34,000 a year from the state for the
diabetes program.
Again, I hope you
will demonstrate your support for your constituents with diabetes and
make funding for diabetes research and prevention a priority.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Harris
Louisiana Jazzland’s Outstanding Teen
